When the Berlin Wall was initially built, few people were permitted
to cross the border. Gradually, the East German government allowed West
Berliners to visit family and friends in the east
and cross-border traffic increased. To cross the wall, people had to pass
through a checkpoint such as "Checkpoint Charlie" and provide all
the required documentation.
