Berlin Germany Tourist Information and Travel Guide
To control the East German population and prevent a counter-revolution, the DDR government established a national security force called the Stasi.
The Stasi building, situated on Karl Marx Allee, was the location where secret records on individuals were maintained. It was called the "Haus der Statistik".
In December 1991, the German government enacted legislation to permit citizens to access their records. For more information, please visit www.bstu.bund.de.
