The Mitte District of Berlin is the centre of culture, commerce and
politics in the city. Important landmarks include the Brandenburg
Gate, Unter den Linden (large boulevard) and Friedrickstrasse (shopping
district). Berlin's medieval roots can be explored at
Nickolaiviertel. Alexanderplatz is also located in the Mitte
District.

Prior to unification, Mitte was part of East Berlin.
