Not everyone in East Berlin enjoyed the same standard of living that was enjoyed on Karl Marx Allee. To gain an appreciation for the type of accommodation that was available to average East Berliners during the DDR era, visitors to Berlin should ride the U-Bahn to the eastern suburbs.

Many of the buildings constructed during the DDR era were large, monolithic structures like the ones shown here.
