Many East German citizens attempted to flee to freedom across the Berlin
Wall. Although many were either shot or captured, others
were successful. Visitors to the Checkpoint Charlie Museum can learn
about some
of the more ingenious methods that East Berliners used to escape to the west.
The photograph being shows how one group managed to flee in a home-made hot
air balloon.
